National Libray Card Sign-Up Month August 27, 2010

Get the Smartest Card @ your library®

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, and the Hardee County Public Library wants to make sure that all children in Hardee County have the smartest card of all – a library card.

Public library programming and books for children make a difference in the lives of students. By providing school-age children with engaging programs and amazing collections, students from all backgrounds become excited and enthusiastic readers.

Activities at the Hardee County Public Library during Library Card Sign-up Month include giving away a McDonald’s coupon for a free ice cream cone for any child who signs up for a library card.

“A library card has always been the most important school supply of all,” says Patti Jean Lang, Library Director. “Today’s libraries are thriving technology hubs that millions rely as either their first or only choice for computer and Internet access. In doing so, libraries provide children with not only the tools to be literate, but information literate as well.  There’s a lot happening at Hardee County Public Library, and the best part for both children and parents – in these though economic times – is that it’s all free with a library card.”

Getting a library card is easy.  Residents of Hardee County are eligible for a free library card.  When the child is applying for a library card a parent or guardian must be present. The adult must supply a current photo ID in addition to proof of residency. Proof of residency must be one of the following documents, which are current, valid and issued in Hardee County: Florida Driver’s License; School or College Identification Card; Voter’s Registration Card; Vehicle Registration; Lease or Rental Agreement for 12 month period; Current property Tax receipt/Bill; Deed to Property; Declaration of Domicile from Clerk of the Courts.

Observed since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month is a time when the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all.

For more information on how to sign up for a library card, visit the Hardee County Public Library at 315 N. 6th Avenue (next to the Sears store), or call 863-773-6438 .

Surprise! April 23, 2010

Filed under: Uncategorized — deeshack @ 5:47 pm

Ok…..a surprise for the library. For several days we have been receiving packages from Amazon.com with books packaged in them. We didn’t order them, so where were they coming from? Today the mystery was solved read this from http//:deweydonationsystem.org

Down and Dewey – Day Four-ish

We’re just a few books away from one hundred donations to libraries in need and I can’t thank you guys enough for your help.

Today’s wishlists:

Hardee County Public Library: Their call for help on their webpage alone should be enough. Already having to close their doors on the weekends, Hardee County Public Library, which serves the tiny town of Wauchula, Florida, and several area libraries, is struggling to have enough money to continue to provide Internet access for its community. I saw the picture of the Lake Placid library, with the comedically sad, wonky letters, and was reminded of a story my mom likes to tell. When I was thirteen and had just moved to a tiny Texas town, I thought I’d find some escape at the library. Mom says I came home inconsolable. “They have like, SIX BOOKS!” I wailed. “It’s like a BOOKMOBILE!” I sobbed into my pillow screaming, “We can’t live here! What am I supposed to READ?!”

It’s not like boys were kissing me, okay? I had books. They never complain when you hug them.

So I’m picking this place because there’s a very good chance this library lives inside a strip mall, what with the way the website makes it look like you’re walking into a We the People. Their Facebook page and their blog shows just how much they care about the community, especially the needs of the children (with an apparent emphasis on homeschooled kids). I see pictures about computer classes for adults and babysitting classes for teens, arts and crafts and movie nights. But I don’t see any books. Can we send them some?

So a huge thank you to all who sent us books. We appreciate all you have done….

Thanks to Florinda, Joanna,Ami, Pamie, Gwen,Heather, Sarah,Patricia,Stephanie,Hillary, Michael,Valeri, Angela, Carolyn

Thanks again for the Books we love them and we love you!

Sandhill Cranes….

Filed under: Uncategorized — deeshack @ 4:53 pm

I really love Sandhill Cranes ..and the connection they have to Wauchula…

Wauchula was named by the Florida Southern Railway when it extended south in 1886 and built a depot in the area, which still exists today. The name was derived from the Miccosoukee Indian word Wa-tu-la-ha-kee, meaning “call of the sand hill crane“.

So our Homeschooled Students have more Sandhill Crane art. We are hoping to make more of these and then use as a Fund Raising project for the Library to help build up our Children and Family DVD collection… here are the newest Sandhill Cranes. These will eventually be pins or brooches to wear… enjoy.

These are the greatest bunch of children and the parents are amazing…especially when they put up with some of my crazy ideas…Thanks to you all!!
